Nepal's vulture restaurant

As vicious and mean as they are often made out to be, vultures are a key part of the ecosystem — their preference for rotting flesh actually helps protect humans from diseases. So when vultures started dying en masse in Nepal and throughout South Asia in the 1990s, conservationists sounded the alarm. They also came up with a unique way of making sure the birds could eat, thrive and repopulate.
